For One Thimble Issue 15, I made the FHS Military Style Messenger Bag by FABulous Home Sewn. It’s not often that my husband will see a pattern sitting on the table and ask me “When are you going to make that one?” I take that back…he has NEVER said that about a pattern. I actually chose to review this pattern because I loved the look of it. The bonus is that he likes it too.
I chose a linen for the exterior and Kona quilting cotton for the lining. The pattern says you can use 2″ webbing or make your own strap from fabric. When making your own strap using fabric, you will need additional fabric for ones measuring 44″ wide. I did not see this mentioned in the pattern and as a result, I ended up having to buy an additional 1/4 yard of my exterior fabric to be able to complete the strap.
It is more purse size than messenger bag size so I would classify this as a crossbody purse. It could accommodate a tablet but not a computer. The cargo pocket on the flap is the perfect size for holding a mobile phone.
This messenger bag is now my everyday bag. I love the look of this linen with the solid pink popping on the inside. The next one I make will have webbing for the straps and I will choose my fabrics according to the webbing colors available.
