As soon as I saw the Minikins iSpy by Sew Sweetness, I knew that I wanted to make one for my three ring binder. I used some Vintage Stars from Fox Field and Chainmail from Elizabeth (both lines by Tula Pink) that match perfectly! Kona cotton is my typical go to for solids so that is what I used for the back and binder attachment piece. This hack works with the large size iSpy.
The only additional materials needed are a piece of fabric that is 10.75″ wide by 3″ tall, a piece of fusible woven interfacing (such as SF101 or Wovenfuse) that is 10″ wide and 2.5 inches tall and three grommets. I had purchased a multi pack of the grommets that came with the tool needed to install them. The packs can be found in the notions aisle at your local Joann’s, Hobby Lobby or Walmart.
First you want to apply the interfacing to your fabric piece for the part that will contain the grommets. This will help stabilize the fabric where the grommets will be installed. Fold the interfaced fabric in half lengthwise with right sides together and sew the two short ends. Turn right side out and push the corners out with your tool of choice. I use a chopstick from the Chinese restaurant. Set this aside and begin assembly of the iSpy pouch following the pattern directions.
When you get to step 7, place your binder attachment piece between the completed front panel and exterior panel, centered along the bottom with raw edges matching. You could baste in place but I just placed it and then used wonderclips to hold everything together while I sewed around the outside.
Finish sewing the bag per the pattern directions then grab your binder. You can use a premade binder pouch or just use the rings in your binder to mark your grommet placement. Once you have the centers marked, place the grommets on top of your binder attachement piece and draw the circles to get your cut lines. I fold the fabric in half to get the cut started and then cut the circles out. I put a little fray check around the edges of the circles as well after cutting out. Install the grommets following the directions on the package and then sit back and admire your gorgeous new pouch in your three ring binder.
