Holiday sewing with 5 out of 4 Patterns Luna and Shenanigans Mash-up

Most of my holiday sewing consists of gifts. My great nieces LOVE to twirl. So I did a Little Luna/Shenanigans mash up so that they could twirl to their hearts content. Both are 5 out of 4 patterns and the Little Luna is even free with a coupon code found in the Facebook Group!

floral skirt 1This mash up is so easy and who doesn’t love a skirt with built in shorts? I used the skirt and waistband from the Little Luna and the shorts are the three inch shorts from the Girl’s Shenanigans pattern. I left the gusset out of the shorts and cut them on the lower waist cut line.

polka dot skirt 1No modeled photos to show you because these are Christmas presents but I know my nieces will absolutely love them! These skirts have maximum twirl so the built in shorts will make sure that they can twirl and stay modest.

floral skirt 2I used 95% cotton 5% lycra for the skirt, waistband and shorts. I got the floral stripe fabric here, the solid fabric here and the polka dots here. It looks like she is sold out of this polka dot but she has lots more to choose from!

polka dot skirt 2My favorite Christmas cookies from when I was young were cookies that looked like candy canes. They are made with almond extract. I haven’t made them in probably 10 years but I couldn’t help but whip up a batch to give you guys a picture to drool over.

candy cane cookiesCandy Cane Cookies:

1 cup soft shortening (at least half butter)

1 cup sifted confectioner’s sugar

1 egg

1 1/2 tsp almond extract

1 tsp vanilla extract

2 1/2 cups sifted flour

1 tsp salt

Red food coloring (I used 10 drops)

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Mix together thoroughly the shortening, confectioner’s sugar, egg, almond extract and vanilla extract. Sift together the flour and salt and stir in. Divide dough in to halves. Blend red food coloring into 1/2 of the dough. Cover and chill dough for 30 minutes, or until easy to handle. Roll teaspoonfuls of dough in to strips 4 inches long. Place one white and one red strip side by side, press together lightly and twist in to candy cane shape. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 9-10 minutes, until lightly browned. Cool slightly before removing from cookie sheet.

Variation: Substitute 1/2 tsp vanilla extract and 1/2 tsp peppermint extract for vanilla and almond extracts. While warm, sprinkle with mixture of crushed peppermint candies and sugar.

Now for the fun part! Who wants to win a 5 out of 4 Pattern? All you have to do is comment with which pattern you would want and who you would make it for (yourself, children, spouse, parent, friend…) I’ll leave this open through midnight on the 7th and winner will be emailed on the 8th! I’ll use random dot org to draw a random winner.

Make sure you check out the rest of the stops on this tour throughout the week for more yummy cookie recipes and chances to win a free pattern!
